Music and Memory

Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is proud to be one of the few long term care facilities in our area to be certified in Music & Memory.

Through the Music & Memory program, we provides personalized music playlists on MP3 players for residents and patients. Music & Memory started with the understanding that music is deeply rooted in our conscious and unconscious brains. As powerful as that idea is, it becomes even more important if the functioning of the brain is deteriorating, as occurs in dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other types of cognitive loss. But music can awaken the brain and with it, the rich trove of memories that are associated with familiar songs or beloved pieces.

Ongoing research and evaluation of Music & Memory’s work in care organizations shows consistent results:

  • Participants are happier and more social
  • Relationships among staff, participants and family deepen.
  • Everyone benefits from a calmer, more supportive social environment
  • Staff regain valuable time previously lost to behavior management issues
  • There is growing evidence that a personalized music program gives professionals one more tool in their effort to reduce reliance on anti-psychotic medications

If you would like your loved one to receive the benefits of this program, contact our Social Work department and they will make a referral and get information from you about your loved one’s music preferences.

You can make a difference!

Personalized music players have proven to be a fantastic way to help lift spirits and reduce loneliness, boredom, anxiety and even pain. Music can help people reconnect with memories, family members and their own personalities. Watch the short video below to see the amazing results that this program has produced!

We would appreciate donations of

  • a new or used iPod or MP3 player that is in working order
  • iTunes gift cards
  • new or used CDs of popular music
  • monetary gifts to buy players and music

We will match your donated iPod with a resident here at Baptist, load it with their personal music favorites, and help them enjoy it whenever they would like to. Your gift can make an enormous difference in someone’s life!
